Haplocyclops torresi n. sp. and Potamocaris estevesi Reid, 1991 from Brazil, with a proposal for revalidation of the genus Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952 (Copepoda) Naturalis
Falavigna Da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo; Torres, Isabela Claret; Maia-Barbosa, Paulina Maria.
The cyclopid genus Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952, generally considered as a subgenus of Bryocyclops, is revalidated, and its diagnosis emended. Haplocyclops torresi sp. n. is described from the Rio Doce, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the first record of this genus from the South American continent. Harpacticoids found in the same river were identified as Potamocaris estevesi Reid, 1991. The latter species is redescribed, the female described for the first time, and its distribution area is widened with new records in rivers of the southeastern part of Brazil. The mouthparts of P. estevesi are described for the first time.

In search of standardisation: A comparison of toxicity bioassays on two marine crustaceans (Palaemon serratus and Tigriopus brevicornis). ArchiMer
Le Dean, Loic; Devineau, J.
In order to mitigate the insufficiency of the number of currently available toxicity tests in marine middle, two studies on the effects of cadmium and zinc were carried through with two marine crustaceans: the prawn Palaemon serratus and a copepoda Tigriopus brevicornis. The comparison of methodologies (rearing conditions - experimental procedure) and results obtained allowed to show the advantages and the disadvantages of these two tests in order to consider a standardization.

The Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758 copepodids experimental contamination on the Rana catesbeiana Shaw, 1802 ladpoles was analized. Sixty percent (12) of infested tadpoles was found parasitized. High mortality range, lower appetence, equilibrium loss and apathy were observed. The parasites showed the preference for the mouth and cloaca: in 72 hours lhe egg saes had already developed.

Inter-annual variability of planktonic copepods in a tropical bay in southeastern Brazil BABT
Dias,Cristina de Oliveira; Bonecker,Sérgio Luiz Costa.
The aim of this work was to study the structure of the copepod community in relation to hydrographic conditions in Espírito Santo Bay, from 1993 to 1997. Zooplankton samples were obtained in the horizontal tows four times a year, using a 200 µm net. Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were determined in the water samples. The overall mean density of the copepods was 9,085 ind.m-3 with the peaks exceeding 15,000 ind.m-3 in the summer and autumn during the first three years (1993 - 1995). The PCA analysis was used to relate the environmental conditions with the distribution of the copepods. The increases in the abundant species, namely Acartia lilljeborgi, Oithona hebes, Oithona oculata, Paracalanus quasimodo, Parvocalanus crassirostris and Euterpina...

Laophontopsis Sars and the taxonomic concept of the Normanellinae (Copepoda: Harpacticoida): A revision Naturalis
Huys, Rony; Willems, Kris A..
The taxonomie concept of the subfamily Normanellinae Lang (Harpacticoida, Laophontidae) is revised. As a result a new family Laophontopsidae is proposed to accommodate Laophontopsis Sars and two new genera Aculeopsis and Telodocus. It is concluded that the presumed boreo-mediterranean distribution pattern displayed by the type species L. lamellifera (Claus) is merely the result of erroneous identifications. The population of northwest Europe is assigned to a new species L. borealis and another new species L. monardi is proposed for Monard’s (1928) material from Banyuls-sur-Mer. L. secundus Sewell is placed in the new genus Telodocus. Aculeopsis gen. nov. embraces only A. longisetosa spec. nov. and constitutes the most primitive genus of the family. The...

Lovenula (Neolovenula) alluaudi (Guerne and Richard, 1890) in the Canary Islands (Copepoda: Calanoida: Paradiaptominae). Stygofauna of the Canary Islands, 19 Naturalis
Bowman, Thomas E..
Lovenula (Neolovenula) alluaudi is widespread on Lanzarote, where it occurred at 22 of the 105 stations. On Fuerteventura it was found at only 2 of the 53 stations, both in the extreme northwest part of the island. It was also found in a reservoir on the south side of the small island of Alegranza. Samples collected at several hundred stations in the other Canary Islands failed to yield a single calanoid, supporting the belief that the eastern islands are fragments of the African continent that drifted to deeper waters. Males outnumbered females in about 2/3 of the samples, often heavily.

Several ecological hypotheses try to explain geographical patterns in biodiversity. The Metabolic Theory of Ecology (MTE) predicts that temperature is the main determinant of richness patterns for ectothermic organisms and that the relationship between richness (lnS) and temperature (1/kT) is a linear relationship with angular coefficient (b) near -0.65. This study tested the MTE for continental zooplankton diversity in 63 lakes in Brazil. Copepoda, Cladocera and Rotifera, as well as the three groups combined, showed different patterns from that predicted by MTE, with b values equal to 0.871, 0.516, 0.720 and 0.901, respectively. Temperature explains 12.7% of the richness of Copepoda, 5.3% of Cladocera, 6.7% of Rotifera, and 11.4% of all zooplankton groups...

Metazoários ectoparasitos do pampo-galhudo, Trachinotus goodei Jordan & Evermann, 1896 (Osteichthyes: Carangidae), do litoral do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v26i1.1654 Biological Sciences
Luque, José Luis; UFRRJ; Cezar, Anderson Dias; Universidade Castelo Branco.

Kihara,Terue C.; Rocha,Carlos E. F..

(COPEPODA, POECILOSTOMATOIDA, ERGASILIDAE) FROM FRESHWATER FISHES OF THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON Acta Amazonica
MALTA,José Celso O..
Miracetyma etimaruyagen. et sp. n. is proposed from the gills filaments of Curimata cyprinoides(Linnaeus, 1758), Potamorhina latior(Spix, 1829) and Psectrogaster essequibensis(Gunther, 1864). The species of the new genus is characterized by having a more complex latching antenna. The claw is greatly reduced and has a groove; the third segment has one or two grooves; the first, second and third segments have one or two cuticular extensions. The legs have pectinate setae and the first endopod is greatly modified, very long, and without setae. The first segment of the first endopod is large, strong and elongate and the second segment is subcylindrical, slender and elongate. These modifications imply in a loss of swimming capacity which is linked to secure...

Morphological comparison of Mesocyclops araucanus Campos et al., 1974, and M. longisetus Thiébaud, 1912, and first description of their males Naturalis
Pilati, Alberto; Menu-Marque, Silvina.
Originally described by Löffler in 1962 as a variety of Mesocyclops longisetus, M. araucanus was found to have autapomorphies of its own to deserve specific rank. For a long time the identification of these two species were mixed up. Here, M. araucanus female is redescribed and the male described for the first time. A comparison is made with M. longisetus, whose male is also described for the first time. Detailed comparison between these two species shows that the following traits on specimens of both sexes can be used to separate the species: length/width ratio of caudal rami, ratio of terminal caudal setae, and length/width ratio of last segment of endopod of leg 4. Additional diagnostic characters for each sex are given. The geographic distributions of...

Moulting in the chalimus larva of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda, Caligidae) Naturalis
Bron, J.E.; Shinn, A.P.; Sommerville, C..
The ultrastructure of moulting in the chalimus phase of the parasitic caligid copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is described for the first time. The major features of the moult sequence correspond to those of other Crustacea, save for the absence of a distinguishable intermoult as defined by reduced epidermal activity and a cessation of cuticle production. This latter may be explained cither in terms of a continuous moulting process related to the constant food supply available to a parasite or in terms of a highly abbreviated intermoult period. The findings are discussed with respect to studies of other Crustacean species.

Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii, a new species of cyclopid (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) from Belize, with remarks on the morphology of the genus Neocyclops Naturalis
Falavigna da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo.
Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii sp. n. is described from Candy’s Pond, Twin Cays, Belize. It is morphologically closest to N. (P.) wellsi Petkovski, 1986 from Mozambique and N. (P.) herbsti Petkovski, 1986 from the Red Sea. Pediger 1 in Neocyclops is distinct although reduced and often concealed beneath the cephalic shield. Specimens of Neocyclops (N.) vicinus and N. (N.) medius showed the same condition, warranting the supposition that the free pediger 1 is a consistent feature of the genus. The genital double somite bears a transverse cuticular thickening which apparently supports the seminal receptacle. The importance of the integumental pore patterns of the urosome and legs as useful taxonomic characters is pointed out.

Neue marine Cyclopoida Gnathostoma (Crustacea, Copepoda) von Puerto Rico. Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 57 Naturalis
Herbst, Hans-Volkmar.
In the flat littoral of the coast of Puerto Rico (West Indies) at the reef of Cayo Enrique a few Cyclopoida Gnathostoma were collected in colonies of the corallimorpharian Ricordea florida Duch & Mich., which belong to the subfamilies Pterinopsyllinae and Euryteinae. These are the following species: Pterinopsyllus insularis n. sp., Euryte grata n. sp. and Ancheuryte notabilis n. g., n. sp. Pterinopsyllus insularis differs from the till now known species of the genus by the number of segments of the first antenna, as well as in the form and armature of P 5. A differential diagnosis and a key for the genus is added. Because of striking differences in the structure of antenna 1 and P 5, a new genus Pterinopsyllotus is established for Pterinopsyllus...

New hypogean cyclopoid copepods (Crustacea) from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico Naturalis
Fiers, Frank; Reid, Janet W.; Iliffe, Thomas M.; Suárez-Morales, Eduardo.
Four previously unknown hypogean species of cyclopoid copepods were collected in cenotes and wells of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Diacyclops chakan sp. n. and D. puuc sp. n. differ from their congeners in combining 3-segmented swimming legs, 11-segmented antennules, and legs 1-4 endopodite segment 2 all with 2 setae. Species of Diacyclops rarely occur in tropical regions, and the Diacyclops described here are only the second and third species recorded from Mexico. The benthic D. puuc was found in the large underground reservoir of a cenote. Diacyclops chakan was encountered in such large open subterranean water basins, but more frequently and abundantly in wells. The two Mesocyclops species, M. chaci sp. n. and M. yutsil sp. n., most closely resemble...
